From the masters

harrisonsaito6

In March and April 2024, I was blessed with teachings from global masters of karate, kung fu, kickboxing and muay thai. Sosui Soeno Yoshiji, Kancho Peter Mylonas and So-Shihan Yamamoto Gonnohyoue and Hanshi Sam Yeung taught me a lot about what many people would dismiss as 'boring' and 'impractical'. See below for more detail.

  • Family is everything. Respect the history, respect those who stick by their principles yet still listen to what others have to say.

  • Don't give up, just keep going.

  • Fate in Japanese concept, is very important. We are connected to particular people and should respect/nurture connections

  • Whatever you do comes back to you in some way (karma)

  • With the rise of more mainstream, fast-paced and dynamic activities ranging from popular sports like soccer to gaming, people are moving away from the more seemingly mundane pursuits like traditional karate. Traditional martial arts particularly, is a way of life. 'Budo'. Fighting and winning trophies can last a decade ish but beyond... Those who stick further often find meaning in martial arts as a way of life. How to become better in day to day life.

  • If you are leading, you don't want people who look up to you to feel the boat rocking too much. Maintain the peace.

  • Again, less is more.

  • Breathwork is foundation to anything.

  • Before any challenge, optimising the mindset is fundamental to how the endeavour goes. Before a fight, before any challenge... Optimise the mind. Calm it, focus.

Fun fact: Both Sosui Soeno and So-Shihan Yamamoto taught Mas Oyama, the founder of 'kyokushin karate'. Yamamoto also taught Bruce Lee for a little bit before he became famous.
